A Note From the Director  Carissa Milam, Owner/Director Acclaimed dance educator and choreographer, Carissa Milam began dancing at age two as has followed her passion and skill ever since. Ms. Milam is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Michigan . Her undergraduate studies focused in psychology and child development. As a dancer, she has received merit scholarships to dance at Jacob’s Pillow, American Dance Festival, Northwestern University’s Summer Program, July program at Bennington College, Tremaine Dance Convention and Interlochen Center for the Arts. She holds a terminal degree in dance education, an MFA from Mills College . During graduate school, Carissa studied under Mary Cochran, Molissa Fenley, Anne Westwick, Bill T. Jones, Kathleen McClintock, and Jeff Slayton. Ms. Milam has danced professionally with national and international companies. She has received additional training and education from the Pulse Teacher’s Workshop and Broadway Dance Center in New York City , Leap-n-Learn Teacher Training, Dance Summit Teacher’s Conference, Rhee Gold’s Summer Conference, and the Love and Logic Institute Parent/Teacher Training. Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Carissa’s earliest memories were at the foot of her mother who owned and operated numerous child enrichment centers in central Texas . Her love of children blossomed at an early age and she always felt called to lead a life in education. Austin Dance Company is named in honor of Carissa’s childhood dance studio. Since she was eight years old, Carissa dreamed of opening a dance studio in memory of her late dance teacher and mentor. Before launching Austin Dance Company, Carissa worked as a studio director to several large dance studios in the San Francisco bay area. She directed over one hundred dancers on competitive dance teams to receive top awards at the industry’s leading conventions and competitions. Carissa Milam lives in central Austin with her husband Andrew and their two sweet daughters, Charlotte and Finley.
